Part 3: Conflict

Aug 23, 2026    Pastor Ken Loss

Conflict is inevitable in marriage, but how we handle conflict can either strengthen our relationship or slowly tear it apart. God’s Word calls us to approach disagreements differently—not allowing anger, bitterness, or hurtful words to take control, but choosing honesty, patience, kindness, and forgiveness. Often, the real battle isn’t simply with our spouse; James reminds us to look inward and recognize the desires, expectations, and motives within our own hearts that may be fueling the conflict.

The way forward begins by addressing the problem instead of attacking the person. We slow down enough to listen before speaking, remembering that human anger doesn’t produce the righteousness God desires. We carefully choose words that build up rather than tear down, and ultimately, we fight toward reconciliation—not simply to win an argument. Because Christ has shown us incredible grace and forgiveness, we can extend that same grace to our spouse. A healthy marriage isn’t one without conflict; it’s one where two people continually choose to handle conflict in a way that honors Christ and protects their covenant.
