The Jesus Story – Chapter 7, Episode 3: Kings

1 Samuel 16

When God chose Israel's next king, He didn't look at the qualities people naturally admire. While Samuel was impressed by Eliab's appearance and stature, God reminded him of a timeless truth: "People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7). David, the youngest son and a shepherd overlooked by everyone else, was the one God had already chosen because of his heart.

This message reminds us that God is far more concerned with who we are than how we appear. Our hearts determine the direction of our lives, shaping our words, attitudes, decisions, and relationships. Jesus taught that whatever fills our hearts will eventually flow from our mouths and actions (Luke 6:45). Because of this, spiritual maturity isn't about maintaining appearances—it's about allowing God to transform us from the inside out. Like David, we are called to cultivate hearts that pursue God above everything else. That requires regularly inviting the Lord to examine us, reveal unhealthy attitudes, and refine our motives. A healthy spiritual "EKG" evaluates our emotions, habits, closest relationships, and our walk with God. When we allow Him to shape our hearts, He prepares us for His purposes, regardless of how others may see us.

Big Idea: God isn't impressed by outward appearance—He is searching for hearts that are fully devoted to Him.
