The Jesus Story Chapter Seven Episode 3: Kings

Jul 12, 2026    Pastor Ken Loss

We live in a culture that encourages us to "pick and choose" what we want to believe. It's easy to accept the parts of God's Word that are comfortable while ignoring the parts that challenge us. But God never calls us to selective obedience—He calls us to complete surrender.

King Saul's story in 1 Samuel 15 is a powerful reminder that partial obedience is still disobedience. Although Saul accomplished much of what God commanded, he intentionally spared King Agag and kept the best livestock because it seemed reasonable in his own eyes. Saul convinced himself that his actions were justified, even claiming the animals would be used as sacrifices to the Lord. Yet God wasn't looking for impressive sacrifices; He was looking for a heart that trusted Him enough to obey completely.

Saul's excuses exposed what was really happening in his heart. Instead of taking responsibility, he shifted the blame, minimized his disobedience, and attempted to dress it up as worship. Samuel's response cuts to the heart of the matter: "Obedience is better than sacrifice." God desires surrendered hearts more than religious activity. No amount of good intentions or spiritual appearances can replace simple obedience to His Word.

Jesus echoed this same truth when He said, "If you love me, obey my commandments." Genuine love for Christ is demonstrated not merely by what we say but by how we live. Wisdom isn't simply knowing God's Word—it is putting God's Word into practice every day.

As followers of Jesus, we must resist the temptation to reshape Scripture around our preferences. Instead, we allow God's truth to shape our beliefs, priorities, and decisions. His Word is our authority, and our greatest act of worship is a life surrendered in obedience.
